An army of Spartans, Thespians and Thebans remained to fight the Persians. Leonidas and the 300 Spartans with him were all killed, along with most of their remaining allies. The Persians found and beheaded Leonidas’ corpse–an act that was considered to be a grave insult.

How is King Leonidas a hero?

King Leonidas is most well known for his heroics at the battle of Thermopylae. King Leonidas and his three hundred men died on August 11th 480 B.C. battle the invading Persian force. King Leonidas was my chosen hero because of his bravery and leadership in battle.

Why was Thermopylae a good place for battle?

Tactically, the pass at Thermopylae was ideally suited to the Greek style of warfare. A hoplite phalanx could block the narrow pass with ease, with no risk of being outflanked by cavalry. Moreover, in the pass, the phalanx would have been very difficult to assault for the more lightly armed Persian infantry.

Did anyone survive the Battle of Thermopylae?

Of the three hundred Spartans at Thermopylae, only two survived the battle: Pantites, who had been sent with a message to Thessaly, and Aristodamus, who was also a messenger or — in a different version — was one of two men excused for severe eye infections.
