What does the condenser condense the turbine exhaust steam?

A surface condenser is a water-cooled shell and tube heat exchanger installed to condense exhaust steam from a steam turbine in thermal power stations. These condensers are heat exchangers which convert steam from its gaseous to its liquid state at a pressure below atmospheric pressure.

What is back pressure in condenser?

High Condenser Pressure High condenser back pressure is the most obvious plant measurable that results in lost revenue or excess operating costs. Turbine exhaust back pressure is directly related to lost power output to the generator that converts mechanical energy to electrical power.

How does a condenser turbine work?

In simple terms, a steam turbine works by using a heat source (gas, coal, nuclear, solar) to heat water to extremely high temperatures until it is converted into steam. The potential energy of the steam is thus turned into kinetic energy in the rotating turbine’s blades.

How does a back pressure steam turbine work?

Back Pressure Turbines: a type of steam turbine that is used in connection with industrial processes where there is a need for low or medium pressure steam. The high pressure steam enters the back pressure steam turbine and while the steam expands – part of its thermal energy is converted into mechanical energy.

Does a condenser increase pressure?

Evaporating temperature and evaporating pressure increase as the pressure drop increases. The enthalpy difference across condenser and compressor, however, increase with the increasing pressure drop.

Is condenser pressure lower than atmospheric pressure?

generally the pressure in the condenser is vacuum means lower than the atmosphere pressure.

What is back pressure turbine generator?

What causes back pressure in exhaust?

Exhaust backpressure can cause a variety of problems. A plugged catalytic converter can strangle engine breathing and cause a big drop in engine performance and fuel economy. Anything that restricts exhaust flow will create excessive backpressure in the exhaust system.

Why is back pressure important in exhaust?

However, a little back pressure is a good thing. In fact, it helps. The right size pipe is large enough to breathe well but small enough to create a high exhaust flow. Steps in the exhaust system also create negative pressure waves that travel back to the cylinder and help empty the cylinder of those gases.

What is the difference between back pressure turbine and condensing turbine?

A condensing turbine does not differ much from a back-pressure turbine in respect of its’ overall dimensions, steam values (with the exception of outlet pressure), delivery time and price. The steam condensing equipment requires some additional “balance of plant” investments plus the availability of cooling water.

What happens when the condenser pressure in a steam turbine is lowered?

By lowering the condenser pressure, the steam is condensed at a lower pressure thus resulting in more expansion through the Turbine which increases the net work done by the turbine. This can be visualised easily through the T-S diagram of Rankine Cycle.

What is the difference between back pressure and extraction condensing turbines?

In this performance curve, e.g., along line GH with arbitrary extraction steam, turbine output can be changed from LG to LH by increasing inlet steam flow from GG to GH. The extraction condensing turbine has more operational flexibility compared with the back pressure turbine, but equipment cost is higher due to additional extraction control valve.

How does the pressure of the condenser affect the efficiency?

The Condenser pressure is directly linked to the amount of Work done by the Turbine which affects the Output and hence the efficiency of the Overall cycle.

What is an extraction-condensing power plant?

Only a power plant is produced in a conventional power plant, but in one of the extraction-condensing power plants, a portion of the steam is released from the turbine to generate heat. In a back-pressure steam turbine, steam is removed from the end of the turbine at a higher pressure than the condenser pressure.
