What does lip dermatitis look like?

Lip eczema appears as redness, dryness, scaling and fissuring. The angle of the mouth is often also involved. The most commonly affected parts of the lips are the perioral skin and vermilion margin. It is important to note your skin and mucosal lesions elsewhere as these may give a clue about the main cause.

How do you treat dermatitis on lips?

Typically, lip eczema is treated with a topical corticosteroid and a moisturizer like a lip balm. If your lip eczema is related to atopic dermatitis, managing the condition will help with dry, itchy lips.

The cause of eczema is often unknown, but it may be linked to an allergy or an irritant, like frequently licking your lips. Genetics may also play a role in developing lip dermatitis.

What does an allergic reaction on your lips look like?

Allergic contact cheilitis usually presents as eczema-like changes on the vermilion margin or skin around the mouth. One or both lips may be red with dryness, scaling and cracking. The changes may be quite localised or affect the whole lip. Involvement of the angles of the mouth may also be seen (angular-cheilitis).

What is exfoliative cheilitis?

Exfoliative cheilitis (EC) is an uncommon condition affecting the vermilion zone of the upper, lower, or both lips. EC is characterized by the persistent production and desquamation of thick scales of keratin and flaking of the vermillion border. When removed, these scales leave a normal appearing lip underneath.

Once the rash occurs, it may last for weeks, and sometimes up to 8 weeks. People may stop using the offending product for 1-2 weeks, but that’s usually not long enough to see results. Apply a non-irritating lip balm (or lip moisturizer) several times a day and before bed. If your lips are very dry and cracked, try a thick ointment, such as white petroleum jelly. Ointment seals in water longer than waxes or oils.
