What does it mean when check engine light disappears?

A check engine light will shut itself off if the condition that caused it is remedied. So, if your converter is marginal, and you did a lot of stop-and-go driving, which creates high demand for the converter, that may have turned on the check engine light.

Is the check engine light supposed to come on when you turn the key on?

If you turn the key on, the MIL light comes on to show that the bulb functions. When you start the car, assuming no faults, the light goes out. That is a self check of the PCM and warning light. Other system lights will also light when key is in only the “on” position for same reasons.

Is there a way to reset the check engine light?

Turning the Ignition On and Off The on-off method is the equivalent fix for a vehicle’s check engine light. It forces the computer to refresh its saved state through a reboot. Simply place your key into the ignition and turn it on for 1-2 seconds, then turn it off for 1-2 seconds. Repeat this step three or four times.

Why does the Check Engine light come on and off?

The light should come on when you turn the key to “ON,” and it should go out after the engine starts. If it NEVER comes on I’d suspect the bulb. Most CELs ground through the ECM so if the first suspect bulb is good then there could be an ECM fault. Hopefully it’s the bulb.

When does the Check Engine light come on in a Toyota Avalon?

When you turn the key to the run position, the check engine light should come on. When you start the engine, the light should go out within a few seconds of startup. If your light does not come on, and you have emissions inspections in your state, your Avalon will not pass the inspection for your plates.

How do I know if my ECM light is bad?

The light should come on when you turn the key to “ON,” and it should go out after the engine starts. If it NEVER comes on I’d suspect the bulb. Most CELs ground through the ECM so if the first suspect bulb is good then there could be an ECM fault.

Why is the maintenance required light on after an oil change?

Perhaps someone removed the bulb or cut the wire to the instrument cluster that turns the bulb on at the last oil change. Now, for a different idea, could it be that the Maintenance Required light was on because it was due for an oil change, and they turned the light out as they should after the required maintenance was performed?
