What do the terms transcendence and immanence mean as attributes of God?

A transcendent is one who is beyond perception, independent of the universe, and wholly “other” when compared to us. There is no point of comparison, no points of commonality. In contrast, an immanent God is one which exists within — within us, within the universe, etc. — and, hence, very much a part of our existence.

As a theologian, Barth was concerned to establish the truth that God can be known only in accordance with his nature and to reject the 19th-century view that saw an identity between the Spirit of God and religious self-consciousness or between the laws of God and the natural structures of man’s life and history.
