Most pet lizards, like leopard geckos, anoles, and house geckos, are insectivores. This means they only eat small insects and invertebrates. In the wild these lizards hunt flies, crickets, grasshoppers, moths, ants, and other small insects. As pets they usually eat crickets, roaches, or mealworms.

The best way to provide them with ample food is to keep your yard pesticide free. The more bugs you have in your yard, the happier the lizards will be, and they’ll stick around.

No more than 10 percent of the lizards’ diet should be fruits, as they tend to have an inverted calcium: phosphorus ratio. Fruits that are good to offer include figs, papaya, melon, apple, peaches, plums, strawberries, tomatoes, banana (with the skin), grapes, kiwi and blueberries.

Many believe that a pet lizard must be fed live bugs or other living animals. While no lizard needs to be offered live prey like mice and chicks (doing this is rather cruel), most require live bugs and will flat out refuse to eat non-moving food items.

Vegetables you can offer include frozen mixed vegetables, squash, zucchini, sweet potato, bell pepper, broccoli, peas, beans, okra, carrot and sprouts. Many vegetarian lizards love flower petals, including roses, hibiscus and others; just make sure that they do not have insecticide or pesticide residue on them.

How long can a lizard live without food or water?

Depending on the lizard’s age, size, and species, they can go without food for anywhere between 2 weeks to 2 months. However, lizards generally cannot survive without water for longer than a few days.
