What do adults mean by the real world?
The “real world” is a dreaded phrase for just about anyone in their 20s. It consists of all the things your parents discussed during those adults-only conversations around the kitchen table — usually including words like “bills,” “investments,” or “benefits” — while you innocently tried to sneak in for a snack.
Will I ever feel like a grown up?
We won’t be able to feel truly grown up because our basic sense of self hasn’t sufficiently evolved into the actual adult we’ve become. Our chronological age, our body, our mind may all say “adult” . . . but our psyche nonetheless continues to say “child.”

In contrast to a “minor”, a legal adult is a person who has attained the age of majority and is therefore regarded as independent, self-sufficient, and responsible. How do you become a functioning adult?
A functional adult:
- Follows the rules. Life has a set of rules that you should know by now.
- Learns to manage money. That means setting a living within a budget.
- Works well with others.
- Treats others with grace.
- Is independent and in relationship.
Why do I feel like Im not ready to be an adult?
Young adults struggling with trauma, depression, or anxiety may feel they are not prepared for adulthood and its many demands. They may be afraid of making changes, or they might not have the life skills and healthy coping mechanisms to handle the stressors of getting a job and taking care of themselves.
What does being an adult come with?
Becoming an adult is different for everyone. For some young people, it means living on your own or going away to college. For others, it means starting your first real job and becoming financially independent. No matter what the circumstances are, becoming an adult means taking responsibility for your life.
