What determines the horsepower of a car?

Behind the Numbers Engine horsepower is measured using a dynamometer, but what the dynamometer really does is measure the torque output of the engine, as well as the RPM – or “revolutions per minute”. These numbers are plugged into a formula (torque x RPM / 5,252) to determine the horsepower.

Does more HP mean a faster car?

The more horsepower, the faster and quicker the car. For example, most formula one race cars can rev up to 18,000 RPM, and hence their horsepower is extremely high. Today the term horsepower is widely used in motor racing to describe power and performance: “the greater the horsepower, the greater the performance.”

Why do old cars feel faster?

Older cars does not do well insulating you from the outside world. you get a sensation of them being quicker because you hear and feel a lot more. In a new car, they are build more solidly to isolate you from the outside world. The smoother and quieter ride numbs you from any sensation of speed.

What factors affect the speed of a car?

Six things which decide top speed of a car

  • Power of the Engine. Yes, the most important factor is how much powerful your engine is.
  • Gear Ratio.
  • Weight of the car.
  • Aerodynamics of the car.
  • Grip of the tires on the road.
  • Calorific value of the fuel used.

Is 50 more horsepower a big difference?

There will be a huge difference in performance between a car with 50 HP and the same car with 100 HP. The difference between the a car with 650 and 700 HP will likely not be noticeable. A significantly heavier car or one with a different transmission may not perform as well as a lighter car with less HP as well.

Does BHP determine speed?

BHP is pretty much the power of an engine in simple terms. The BHP determines the acceleration and top speed of a vehicle. Often fast and quick vehicles will focus more on the BHP than the torque.

Why do race cars have such high horsepower?

Racecars have high horsepower due to high RPMs, not due to high torque (see gearing). “Below 5252 RPMs any engine’s torque will always be higher than its horsepower, and above 5252 RPMs any engine’s horsepower will always be higher than its torque. At 5252 RPMs the horsepower and torque will be exactly the same.” — revsearch.com

How does the transmission know how much horsepower a car has?

Gearing. The torque at the wheels is the torque at the engine combined with the torque magnification given by the transmission through gearing. So the transmission only sees what’s coming off the engine, while the wheels see the resulting force combination of the engine plus the transmission. That’s what horsepower represents.
