What could happen during power transmission if the voltage is too high?

The amount of current in a circuit depends on the voltage supplied: if the voltage is too high, then the wire may melt and the light bulb would have “burned out real time”. Similarly other electrical devices may stop working, or may even burst into flames if an overvoltage is delivered to the circuit.

What are the disadvantages of transmission at high voltages?

Disadvantages of High Voltage Transmission It increases radio interference. The height of towers and insulation increases with increase in transmission voltage. The cost of different types of equipment and switchgear required for transmission increases with increase in transmission voltage.

What is the maximum transmission voltage?

Transmission voltage in India (highest) is 765 kV AC and these lines are erected by Power Grid Corporation for interstate connections throughout India. DC transmission voltage (highest) in India is 800 kV . This has restriction due to conversion i.e. AC/DC & inversion i.e. DC/AC for bulk power transmission.

What is the largest voltage of transmission under construction?

The highest AC voltage transmission line in the world is the Ekibastuz- Kokshetau line in Kazakhstan operating at 1150KV. A 1200KV line is under construction in India from Wardha-Aurangabad.

Why is electricity transmitted at high voltage and low current?

The primary reason that power is transmitted at high voltages is to increase efficiency. As electricity is transmitted over long distances, there are inherent energy losses along the way. The higher the voltage, the lower the current. The lower the current, the lower the resistance losses in the conductors.

Is high voltage safer than low voltage?

Current will flow only if the voltage is sufficiently high. The amount of current depends on the resistance of the load across the voltage source. Talking of safety of human body, low voltage is safer as the resistance of the body cannot force a high enough current to flow.
