What causes folds in the retina?

Causes: Most commonly idiopathic. Others include hyperopia, choroidal tumor or detachment, choroidal neovascular membrane, optic disk swelling, orbital tumors, scleral buckle, hypotony, orbital and scleral inflammation.

What is a folded retina?

Retinal folds related to vitreous traction are uncommon and occur when the vitreous is incarcerated in a corneal wound and has detached posteriorly to a circumferential area of firmer adherence to the retina.

What happens if the retina is wrinkled or folded?

When the scar tissue contracts, it causes the retina to wrinkle, or pucker, usually without any effect on central vision. However, if the scar tissue has formed over the macula, our sharp, central vision becomes blurred and distorted.

Can you reverse retinal thinning?

Many of retina problems, if detected early, can be reversed. In many patients, when wet macular degeneration has been discovered early, it has resulted in a cure. I have many patients with early diabetic retinopathy that we are able to control, so there is no progression to the advanced stages.

What is Chorioretinal scar?

A chorioretinal scar is an area of pigmentary change or fibrosis that is located on the inside surface of the eye. These may be the result of an old infection or injury, but in some cases we do not know the source. If the chorioretinal scar is in the central retina, it can cause decreased vision.

Can you reverse retinal damage?

In many cases, damage that has already occurred can’t be reversed, making early detection important. Your doctor will work with you to determine the best treatment. Treatment of retinal disease may be complex and sometimes urgent.

Can you go blind from macular pucker?

Vision loss from a macular pucker can vary from no loss to severe loss, although severe vision loss is uncommon. People with a macular pucker may notice that their vision is blurry or mildly distorted, and straight lines can appear wavy.
