What are the limitations of group therapy?
Several disadvantages to group therapy are:
- The client is not the focus of attention.
- The level of confidentiality in groups is far less secure than it is an individual therapy.
- The notion of social loafing is a problem with all group efforts.
Can therapy not work?
If therapy has failed you, you still have plenty of options for feeling better. If therapy isn’t working, the first person you should talk to is your therapist. She may opt to change her approach to treatment, pursue more “homework” options for you, or even refer you to another therapist.
How many weeks should group therapy last?
Most groups last 8-10 weeks. Others will continue from one term to the next, perhaps taking a break over summer and winter vacations.
Does group therapy work for everyone?
Although the Group Therapy model of sharing pain and insights works for many people, it might not work for you. Therapy is a very individual process. There’s no shame in accepting that a model doesn’t work, and in finding the therapy that’s right for you.
Why do so many people not go to therapy?
Many people do not actually want to do the work to change what they are struggling with, but merely want to go to therapy to vent every week, without wanting to develop more self-awareness and/or apply this to their life. Therapists are not magicians, and therefore cannot help a person change anyone else besides the client.
What is the difference between supportsupport and group therapy?
Support Groups are not supported by a therapist, but are comprised solely of people experiencing the same disorder or problem. Group Therapy frequently involves activities, such as trust-building exercises, that aim to work through the root of the difficulties its’ members are facing.
Why won’t my therapist let me share insights with the group?
If you don’t have a problem sharing insights with the group, the problem may be that the way your therapist chooses to work just isn’t right for you. If that’s the case, it’s advisable to seek another therapist who runs group sessions in your area.
