What are the 3 purposes of prisons?

As previously mentioned, the three primary purposes of prisons are being a deterrent to crime, a punishment to the criminal, and to rehabilitate the criminal.

Why should prisons be punished?

The punishment aspect that receives the most scrutiny and research dollars is deterrence. Advocates of deterrence follow the reasoning that punishment is only useful if it serves to deter convicted offenders from further crime and deterring members of society from committing crimes in the first place.

How are prisoners Categorised?

Some time after sentencing, adult male prisoners are assigned to the correct security category and allocated to an appropriate prison. Categorisation is based on the level of risk a prisoner might pose to the public or national security should they escape and the likelihood of their making attempts to do so.

Cat C – Prisoners who cannot be trusted in open conditions but who have neither the resources nor the will to make a determined escape attempt. Cat D – Prisoners who present a low risk, can be reasonably trusted in open conditions and for whom open conditions are appropriate.

Average Wages for Inmates Typically, wages range from 14 cents to $2.00/hour for prison maintenance labor, depending on the state where the inmate is incarcerated. The national average hovers around 63 cents per hour for this type of labor. In some states, prisoners work for free.

They live on their prison job income, which usually amounts to approximately 20 bucks a month. These inmates have to have a “side hustle” to earn money and survive. A side hustle can be anything from making hooch to doing an inmate’s laundry or cleaning their dishes. Opportunities to earn money in prison are limited.

What happens if a prisoner refuses to eat?

If the individual is refusing both fluids and food, then deterioration is expected rapidly, with risk of death as early as seven to fourteen days. Deterioration of muscle strength and increased risk of infection can occur within three days of fasting.
