What are drowned towns?

These drowned towns were intentionally flooded behind new dams, their buildings removed or dismantled, and their residents displaced.

The small towns of Dana, Enfield, Greenwich and Prescott are lost under the Quabbin Reservoir. As the city of Boston grew in the early 1800’s they quickly ran into an increasing water shortage, so plans were put in place to flood the valley that would become the Quabbin Reservoir.

Why are towns flooded?

Urban centers are more prone to flooding than other areas because streets, parking lots, and buildings are impervious, meaning water can’t seep into the ground the way it would in a forest or grassland. Instead, it flows. Detroit, like many older cities, deals with flowing stormwater by combining it with sewage.

A controversial plan to establish a colony of endangered timber rattlesnakes on an island in the Quabbin Reservoir is now on hold. According to western Massachusetts state Sen. Eric Lesser, the state Fisheries and Wildlife Board voted Wednesday to indefinitely suspend the plan.

Are boats allowed on Quabbin Reservoir?

All private boats must have an intact Quabbin Boat Seal (QBS) to launch on the reservoir. Seals can be obtained through a DCR approved decontamination and inspection process. You can make an appointment by calling the Quabbin Visitor Center at (413) 323-7221.

The town, which was once a Mormon settlement and a stopping point between Los Angeles and Salt Lake City along the Arrowhead Trail, was abandoned in 1930s after the construction of the Hoover Dam caused the Colorado River to rise—the area was submerged in 60 feet of water when Lake Mead first filled up.
