Turkey has been in NATO since not long after the organisation was formed and was, in fact, the “West’s Cuba” in the Cuban Missile Crisis, as the USA installed missiles in Turkey in realisation for the USSR putting missiles in Cuba. Turkey was a staunchly anticommunist part of the Western Alliance throughout the Cold War.
