Was Doggerland real?
Doggerland (also called Dogger Littoral) was an area of land, now submerged beneath the southern North Sea, that connected Great Britain to continental Europe. It was flooded by rising sea levels around 6500–6200 BCE.
When did Doggerland submerge?
By around 8,500 years ago most of Doggerland was submerged beneath the North Sea and Britain was cut off from the European mainland. Dogger Bank remained as an island before it too was flooded by a tsunami around 8,200 year ago, caused by a submarine landslide off the coast of Norway.

At that point, the island was completely submerged, and all traces of it vanished into the waves of the rough North Sea.
How long did it take for Doggerland to disappear?
What happened to it? We know much of the polar ice melted, causing sea levels to rise around the world. By about 8200 years ago, Doggerland had gradually shrunk in size, leaving Dogger Island surrounded by a small archipelago (see image above).

How did Doggerland survive the sea?
While most of Doggerland was inundated, the archipelago survived for millennia, until it too was swallowed by rising sea levels caused by climate change. If sedimentary evidence for the period is hard to find, archaeological remains from Doggerland’s early occupiers are even more elusive.
