Should you wear a wetsuit when surfing?

You do NOT need to wear a wetsuit to surf. Wetsuits actually make paddling and movement harder. Wetsuits are just worn to keep surfers warm. When the water is extremely cold chances are you will need to wear a wetsuit when surfing otherwise the water will sap you of all your energy and make you shivering and cold.

When can you surf without a wetsuit?

Provided the water temperature is around 18°C (65°F) or above, you can surf without a wetsuit. However, many surfers still wear a wetsuit in warmer water so that they can surf longer, prevent injuries and protect their skin from the sun.

What are surfing suits for?

Wetsuits are usually worn by swimmers, divers, or surfers who swim in cold water. Wetsuits insulate the swimmers, or help them retain body heat. This, in turn, helps the swimmers avoid hypothermia, a dangerously low body temperature. Wetsuits are made of a kind of rubber called neoprene.

What is wetsuit material?

Wetsuits are made of closed-cell foam neoprene, a synthetic rubber that contains small bubbles of nitrogen gas when made for use as wetsuit material (neoprene may also be manufactured without foaming for many other applications where insulating qualities are not important).
