Should heat pump fan run when heat is on?

The fan on your unit should spin when you want air in your house and shouldn’t spin when the temperature of your house matches the thermostat setting. Heat pumps take in hot air from the outside and cool it before blowing it into your home.

What causes the compressor not to come on?

If the compressor isn’t starting, check the wiring connecting the two units. If it’s a blown fuse or tripped circuit breaker, the search has come to an end. Other potential causes may include a faulty thermostat, mismatched indoor and outdoor units, or the AC may just be old.

Why is my heat pump compressor not running?

A clogged condenser coil can overheat the compressor. Go ahead and clean your condenser coils, replace or wash your filters and make sure the supply vents are clear of blockages. If your compressor still does not turn on, it may be time to bring in an HVAC technician.

Why is my heat pump fan not turning?

If the compressor is running but the fan is not, the cause is either a bad fan motor or a burned out capacitor. But first, check for debris! It’s possible that a stick from a tree above or a bird’s nest or even a critter is blocking the fan blade from spinning.

Should my compressor run when heat is on?

During warm temperatures, it removes the heat in the air from the indoors and shifts it outdoors. During cold weather, the heat pump’s compressor (which is housed in the outdoor unit) will still run in order to place the refrigerant under high pressure and high heat.

Why is my heat pump not heating?

Low refrigerant charge – If your system is low on refrigerant charge, it won’t be able to keep up with either heating or cooling demand. Another sign of low refrigerant charge is a frozen coil. Bad reversing valve – If you have a heat pump not heating, but it works in cooling mode, you might have a bad reversing valve.

Heat Pump Troubleshooting Problem #3: BLOWING COLD IN HEAT MODE. First of all, just check and make sure your unit was not accidentally switched to a/c mode. Next, check your outdoor unit is not iced over (see Heat Pump Troubleshooting Problem #1). If not, your system may have a valve problem, a refrigerant charge issue, or a compressor problem.

Why is my heat pump making noise?

If you hear squealing sounds and grinding noises, that’s a bad sign. Shut off your system and call a heat pump repair technician as it’s likely that the motor’s bearings are failing. If your heat pump is making rattling noises, make sure that the cover panels are screwed on tight and that there aren’t loose parts in the air handler.
