Is voting for NOTA a waste?

NOTA is considered a “waste of vote”, “merely cosmetic”, “a symbolic instrument to express resentment”, voters expressing their “disenchantment with the existing political system” and possibly “a mere decoration”.

What is the meaning of Nota?

“None of the above”, or none for short, also known as “against all” or a “scratch” vote, is a ballot option in some jurisdictions or organizations, designed to allow the voter to indicate disapproval of the candidates in a voting system.

Is it voting mandatory?

In the U.S., no one is required by law to vote in any local, state, or presidential election. According to the U.S. Constitution, voting is a right. Many constitutional amendments have been ratified since the first election. However, none of them made voting mandatory for U.S. citizens.

The figure, however, was lower than 1.5\% of the total voters. Around 50,000 voters opted for NOTA in Delhi; 3.56 lakh in Chhattisgarh; 5.9 lakh in Madhya Pradesh and 5.67 lakh in Rajasthan. There was a similar provision before NOTA.

“Voters, who without any legitimate justification, have not been exercising the valuable right of franchise the Indian Constitution has conferred on them have, unwittingly thus, been casting a negative vote against all the contesting candidates without intending to do so,” Advani wrote in a blog.
