Is stainless steel less likely to rust?

Stainless steel is a steel alloy that contains a minimum chromium content of 10.5\%. The chromium reacts with the oxygen in the air and forms a protective layer that makes stainless steel highly resistant to corrosion and rust. The higher the chromium content, the less likely the metal will rust.

The problem with paint is that, unlike galvanising, it does not protect the steel if the steel becomes exposed. Additionally, the paint is degraded by ultra-violet radiation and weathering, so it must be continually replaced.

Grade 304, otherwise referred to as the UNS 30400, is the most popular of Austenitic or the 300 series. That’s why this metal displays a higher resistance to corrosion by salty water.
