Is sexual selection happening in humans?

Is sexual selection happening in humans?

Sexual selection is quite different in non-human animals than humans as they feel more of the evolutionary pressures to reproduce and can easily reject a mate. The role of sexual selection in human evolution has not been firmly established although neoteny has been cited as being caused by human sexual selection.

How does sexual selection help in evolution?

By choosing certain males, their offspring will likely inherit genes that tend to increase their fitness. Males often evolve traits and displays that advertise their ability to provide direct and indirect benefits, and females evolve preferences for these traits.

What is the role of beauty in sexual selection and how does this affect evolution?

The more attractive the male trait, the more a female benefits her progeny by preferring it, since the increased attractiveness of her sons increases mating success enough to make up for their lower survival. This circumstance may give rise to runaway coevolution between male trait and female preference (Lande 1981).

How does sexual selection affect populations?

Sexual selection leads to a decrease in the effective population size (Ne) because non-attractive individuals are less likely to reproduce (Kokko & Brooks 2003). A reduced Ne would facilitate inbreeding and genetic drift, leading to the fixation of maladaptive alleles (Keller & Waller 2002).

Is sexual selection beneficial?

Sexually selected traits evolve through sexual selection, that is, through the competition between individuals of the same sex for mates and fertilisations [1]. They are hence beneficial to the individual if they increase the number or quality of offspring produced.

What role did sexual selection play in the evolution of humans?

Darwin believed that sexual selection played a major role in the evolution of humans and the divergence among distinct human populations, so he felt a lengthy description of sexual selection was necessary.

What is sexual selection according to Darwin?

His original definition of sexual selection, which appeared in The Origin of Species, appears to emphasize male–male combat [i.e., “a struggle between the males for possession of the females” (ref. 1, p 88)], but even then he was clearly aware of female choice.

What is the descent of Man and selection in relation to sex?

In typical Darwinian fashion, The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex is a colossal tome (with a tongue-tripping title that we will henceforth abbreviate as The Descent of Man) that strolls through myriad topics relevant to evolutionary biology and ecology.

Are key aspects of sexual selection still disputed?

However, a review of the literature shows that key aspects of sexual selection are still plagued by confusion and disagreement. Many of these areas are complex and will require new theory and empirical data for complete resolution.
