Is protective custody better than general population?

It depends on whom the inmate needs protection from. A “PC unit” is any group of inmates segregated from the general prison population for their safety. These measures protect inmates from the general prison population but aren’t very good at keeping inmates safe from others in the PC unit.

Gen pop, short for general population, is a prison term for the main body of prisoners that haven’t been segregated into special housing for disciplinary or protective measures. Gen pop is also used to mean “the mainstream” outside prison contexts.

Why would an inmate be in protective custody? Protective custody is a special type of imprisonment that is designed to protect the inmate from harm. If an inmate feels they are in danger of being harmed or killed by other inmates in the general population, they can request to PC.

The general population is the entire population of individuals with a characteristic of interest, such as a particular disease or condition of clinical concern. It is differentiated from the subject sample chosen from that population for a particular study.

Police powers to protect children were first brought into law in the Prevention of Cruelty to, and Protection of, Children Act 1889. This Act allowed the police to “take into custody without warrant” anyone who causes harm to children and take the child involved to a place of safety until the case is brought to court.

Why do inmates wear brown?

Dark brown — indication that an inmate is a protected or vulnerable inmate. These inmates often live in isolated conditions and are not allowed to mingle with “gen-pop” inmates. They often need special management. Blue — a maximum custody inmate wears blue.
