This neurosteroid potentiates the inhibitory actions of γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) by modulation of the GABAA receptor. Consistent with this GABAergic mechanism, progesterone and allopregnanolone administration usually produce an anxiolytic effect11, 13 by the action on the amygdala.

Does progestin increase androgen?

Progesterone decreases the target organs response to estrogen by decreasing the number of receptors the organ has for estrogen.

A lack of progesterone can lead to a variety of health issues and can also contribute to hair loss. Progesterone is a natural inhibitor of 5-alpha-reducrase. This is an enzyme that converts testosterone into DHT. DHT is one of the main causes of pattern hair loss for both men and women.
