Is privatization is good or not?

Privatization is beneficial for the growth and sustainability of the state-owned enterprises. Following the trend of privatization across the world, the Indian government in the 1990s also introduced privatization amid hue and cry from many of the political and social groups.

Can electricity be privatized?

In October 2019, the Power Ministry in India came up with a franchisee model plan for states to have multiple private franchisees as power suppliers, and distribution utilities would act as wholesale electricity suppliers. The reforms include pushing state-owned distribution utilities to adopt privatisation models.

Does the government own the power grid?

A: The Federal government, through the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission, regulates interstate power sales and service. State governments, through their public utility commissions or equivalent, regulate retail electric service as well as facility planning and siting.

What is privatized power distribution?

The states order them to sell electricity to poor households and farmers at a fraction of the cost of purchase and distribution, or even free. On units sold to them, discoms incur huge under-recovery. This is aggravated by aggregate technical and commercial (AT&C) losses — mostly theft.

Most discoms are state-owned, and only about 10 percent of India’s population is served by private distribution licensees.
