Is it worth keeping first edition books?

Speaking generally, first editions will hold the most value if they are first editions, first printings. Depending on who has published the book and what formats it has been published in, you’ll be looking for hardcover books mostly. But don’t assume all hardcovers are first printings!

Why is first edition so expensive?

Typically, the first edition of an author’s first book will be in highest demand because it was initially printed for a small audience. When these books become popular, the next novel from a writer will have a much larger edition size. An excellent example of this is J. K. Rowling’s books.
