Is it true that alchemists thought they could change lead into gold?

In modern times, it has been discovered that lead can in fact be turned into gold, but not through alchemy, and only in insignificant amounts. Nuclear transmutation involves the use of a particle accelerator to change one element into another.

Was alchemy a metaphor?

Jung considered alchemy a metaphor for certain universal psychological functions and believed that the archetypal images of alchemy, mythology, and religion could help to describe and understand psychic life. The metaphorical perception of alchemy grew a new taproot in the Jungian school of psychology.

Why did the alchemists fail to turn lead into gold?

Alchemists assumed that the ability to destroy gold would be followed quickly by their ability to create it. Alchemists, of course, never could make gold. Gold is an “element,” a substance composed entirely of one kind of atom and not further divisible by chemical processes into other kinds of atoms.

But what of the fabled transmutation of lead to gold? It is indeed possible—all you need is a particle accelerator, a vast supply of energy and an extremely low expectation of how much gold you will end up with.

Can gold be artificially made?

Gold has been made artificially. It can be done either in a particle accelerator or a nuclear reactor, from another heavy metal, commonly mercury. The process is however much too expensive to be economically viable and usually produces a few atoms at a time.
