Is it safe to give babies multiple vaccines at once?
Getting multiple vaccines at the same time has been shown to be safe. Scientific data show that getting several vaccines at the same time does not cause any chronic health problems.
How many vaccines can you give at once?
There is no upper limit for the number of vaccines that can be administered during one visit. ACIP and AAP consistently recommend that all needed vaccines be administered during an office visit. Vaccination should not be deferred because multiple vaccines are needed.
Do multiple vaccines overwhelm?
Current studies do not support the hypothesis that multiple vaccines overwhelm, weaken, or “use up” the immune system. On the contrary, young infants have an enormous capacity to respond to multiple vaccines, as well as to the many other challenges present in the environment.
What is the appropriate protocol for administering multiple vaccines?
If multiple vaccines are administered at a single visit, administer each injection in a different injection site. For infants and younger children receiving more than two injections in a single limb, the thigh is the preferred site because of the greater muscle mass.
How long do you need to wait between vaccines?
People aged 18 or over should have their 2nd dose from 8 weeks after their 1st dose. Most people aged 16 or 17 should have their 2nd dose from 12 weeks after their 1st dose.
Which vaccines can be combined?
Common combination vaccines for children
Vaccine Name | Combines |
---|---|
Pediarix | DTaP + Hep B + IPV |
ProQuad | MMR + varicella (chickenpox) |
Kinrix | DTaP + IPV |
Pentacel | DTaP + IPV + Hib |
Can you give 2 IM injections in the same arm?
Multiple injections given in the same extremity should be separated as far as possible (preferably at least 1” apart). Insert needle at an 45o angle to the skin. Pinch up on SQ tissue to prevent injecting into muscle.
