Is it immoral to disobey the law?

In short, if anybody ever has a right to break the law, this cannot be a legal right under the law. It has to be a moral right against the law. And this moral right is not an unlimited right to disobey any law which one regards as unjust. It is a case, as it were, of holding the legal system to ransom.

What makes a law unethical?

‘Unethical’ defines as something that is morally wrong, whilst something being ‘illegal’ means it is against the law. In an illegal act, the decision-making factor is the law. For an unethical act, the deciding agent is the man’s own conscience. An unethical deed may be against morality but not against the law.

Consider the parallel with a promise : I am under a moral obligation to return a borrowed book but that obligation can be overriden by the more important moral obligation to help a dying person.
