Is it animal cruelty to make a dog vegan?

Feeding your dog a well-researched, balanced vegan diet like v-dog does not fall under the category of cruelty to animals. We know what does fall under physical and intentional abuse towards animals: common industry practices of animal agriculture.

For this reason, vegan dogs will struggle to digest the high fibre of plant-based diets and are at risk of vitamin D and B deficiencies. In one study of vigorously exercising dogs, those eating a plant-based diet showed damage to their blood. The blood remained normal in meat-eating dogs.

Many vegans feel that given the existence of domesticated cats, dogs and other animals, keeping them as respected and cared for companions is preferable to any other option. How do vegans get carnitine?

Red meat has the highest levels. A 4-ounce beef steak has an estimated 56 mg to 162 mg of carnitine. Carnitine is also found in smaller amounts in chicken, milk and dairy products, fish, beans, and avocado. Vegans tend to get less carnitine from foods, but their bodies usually produce enough anyway.

Can Vegans have pet cats?

Unfortunately, the cat is the absolute opposite of vegan. Cats are obligate carnivores – they MUST eat meat. It is neither ethical (nor legal) to try and make a cat into a “natural” vegetarian, let alone vegan.

Because they’re obligate carnivores, or “true” carnivores — meaning they depend only on the nutrients found in animal flesh for their survival — their bodies (specifically, their gastrointestinal tracts) are not ideally suited to digesting non-meat foods.
