Is homeschooling getting more popular?

Across the U.S., as the Census Bureau recently reported, the proportion of households with school-aged children practicing homeschooling doubled between the Spring and Fall of 2020, growing from 5.5\% to 11.1 percent. Prior to 2020, only about 3\% of elementary and secondary school students in the U.S. were homeschooled.

Data suggest that approximately 1.2 million families switched to homeschooling last academic year, bringing the total number of homeschooled students to 3.1 million. According to the Census Bureau, Black and Hispanic families now have the highest estimated rates of homeschooling, at 16\% and 12\%, respectively.

Research suggests homeschooled children tend to do better on standardized tests, stick around longer in college, and do better once they’re enrolled. A 2009 study showed that the proportion of homeschoolers who graduated from college was about 67\%, while among public school students it was 59\%.

Skipping the woes of peer pressure and bullying is not the only reason why homeschooling is becoming popular. Today, approximately 3 per cent of Americans are homeschooled. Some of the popular pros of homeschooling are – the increased opportunity to participate in children’s’ learning process and greater control.
