Increasing automation in the construction industry is expected to displace or replace as much as 49 percent of the America’s blue-collar construction workforce (2.7 million workers) and eliminate nearly 500,000 non-construction jobs by 2057, according to the MEPI study.

As history has demonstrated, the profession of architecture is difficult to automate. They give architects a 1.8-percent chance of being automated, compared to a 93.5-percent chance for accountants, and an 89.4-percent chance for taxi drivers.

The demand for workflow automation processes is expected to spike to $26 billion by 2025, up from less than $5 billion in 2018. More than 25\% of companies use automation in their hiring process, and by 2022, 70\% of customer service interactions will leverage some sort of AI automation technology.

Despite the predictions of massive job losses, AI is unlikely to replace the human workforce. Instead, it will alter business models in the construction industry, reduce expensive errors, reduce worksite injuries, and make building operations more efficient.

As in all industries, automation will create an increasing skill mismatch in construction. Workers will still need a fair amount of physical skills: even if robots do the physical work of laying bricks, workers will still need to drive and maneuver heavy equipment.
