Is Beckers nevus rare?

Becker’s nevus syndrome is a rare syndrome, and the diagnosis is mostly clinical, characterized by a well-outlined area of hyperpigmentation, in association with hypoplasia of the ipsilateral breast, areola and/or nipple, musculature, adipose tissue, and limb [4].

Is Becker’s nevus bad?

Becker’s nevus (also known as “Becker’s melanosis”, “Becker’s pigmentary hamartoma”, “nevoid melanosis”, and “pigmented hairy epidermal nevus”) is a benign skin disorder predominantly affecting males.

What is the cause of nevus?

These marks are thought to be caused by a localized increase in melanocytes as a baby grows in the womb. Melanocytes are the skin cells that produce melanin, which gives skin its color. A nevus has an increased amount of melanocytes. The condition is thought to be caused by a gene defect.

Treatment is primarily for cosmetic reasons (hyperpigmentation or hair growth) and may include Ruby laser treatment or laser-assisted hair removal. In very rare cases, Becker’s nevus is associated with other skin features; muscular or skeletal features; or underdevelopment (hypoplasia) of the breast.

Are nevus hereditary?

Congenital nevi are thought to be caused by a genetic mutation, called a sporadic mutation, which develops randomly as a baby grows in the womb. The condition is not inherited.

What is Becker’s nevus or Becker melanosis?

Becker’s nevus also known as Becker melanosis, is a non-cancerous, large, brown birthmark occurring mostly in males. Becker’s nevus can be present at birth, but is usually first noticed around puberty. Becker’s nevus typically occurs on one shoulder and upper trunk but occasionally occurs elsewhere on the body.

Is Becker’s nevus a hamartoma?

Becker’s Nevus is considered to be a pigmented hamartoma of skin; a hamartoma is a developmental anomaly.

What is Becker’s naevus?

A Becker naevus is a large one-sided brown patch, sometimes over half the upper back or chest. After puberty it often becomes darker and quite hairy, a feature also called hypertrichosis. Occasionally acne may develop in the naevus.

Is nevus birthmark present from birth?

It is sometimes present from birth. Pigmentation (darkening of skin color) may be subtle at first, but the nevus often darkens after puberty and expands. The resulting birthmark is usually large, brown, and on one side of the body. The nevus may grow more hair than the surrounding skin.
