Is a texel the same as a pixel?

A texel is similar to a pixel (picture element) because it represents an elementary unit in a graphic. But there are differences between the texels in a texture map and the pixels in an image display. Then an averaging process must be used; several texels are combined to form each pixel.

What does texel mean in graphics?

A Texel is a single-pixel within a texture map, which is an image that gets used (in whole or in part) as the image presented on a polygon’s surface within a 3D rendered image. It is not to be confused with pixel which is the unit of screen space.

How many pixels is a texel?

For example, a texel density of 512 pixels per meter would need a 1 meter real size to span 2 UV units for a 256 x 256 texture, but only 1/2 UV units for a 1024 x 1024 texture. This tool is useful in games development and environment texturing workflows.

What is a Gigatexel?

Gigatexels is a measure of the texture unit throughput. Basically it is capable of 128.8 billion filtered texture samples per second. 1) A texel can vary in size as you mention. A texture is often RGBA 4 chars (4-bytes), float (4-bytes), or 4 floats (16-bytes).

What is GPU Fillrate?

Fill rate refers to the number of pixels that a video card can render or write to memory every second. It is measured in megapixels or gigapixels per second, which is obtained by multiplying the clock frequency of the graphics processing unit (GPU) by the number of raster operations (ROPs).
