Is a flat fretboard better?

-Flat fretboards are better for the fingerpicking hand, as it gives a more uniform height to the strings. Also better for bends higher up the fretboard as a radius can cause the treble string to “choke” or feel higher action.

Is a straight guitar neck bad?

Having a straight neck makes for a better playing instrument, but not all guitars and playing styles allow for a completely straight neck. Therefore, some relief is acceptable, and often necessary. Due to the elliptical vibration of a string, a little relief may prevent buzzing in the first and second positions.

How much curve should a guitar neck have?

At the deepest point of the curve, which is usually at about the 7th or 8th fret on an electric guitar, this should measure between 0.005 to 0.020 inch (or 0.015 to 0.05 centimeter). If you measure no relief, the neck may be convex.

Does fretboard radius really matter?

A more rounded fretboard makes playing barre chords much easier, at the expense of making bending more difficult. The higher action required requires more left hand effort to play, but in many instances is preferred by fingerstyle and slide players.

Does guitar neck shape matter?

There is no best guitar neck shape because every guitarist has different preferences. Some guitarists prefer a thicker and rounder guitar neck to grip, while others prefer a flatter or thinner neck.

Which neck shape is best for small hands?

Small hands: C or flat C shaped necks Generally the shallower the profile the better e.g. C or flat C, provided it is in combination with a thin fretboard. One of the challenges of playing guitar with small hands is the ability to span frets.

How do you tell if your neck is bowed?

Look at the relationship between the string and the fret board at around the 7th fret: if the string is touching the fret then the neck is straight or even back bowed, and if there is a gap then the neck is bowing forward.
