How many fouls until a team reaches the bonus in the NBA? An NBA team enters the bonus and is rewarded with free throws once the opponent has committed its fifth common foul of the quarter. This means that a team is allowed four common fouls per quarter, and free throws are awarded on the fifth common foul.

What does it mean when a team has a bonus?

Bonus refers to the amount of fouls one team has. If they foul more than 4 times per quarter (depending on the competition rules and game situation) the 5th foul is the bonus and the other team is awarded 2 free-throws. Each time from now on, if the team commits another foul this process is repeated.
