Govt plans to make FASTag mandatory for buying third party vehicle insurance from April 1, 2021. As per Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, FASTag had been made mandatory since 2017 for registration of new four-wheeled Vehicles and is to be supplied by the Vehicle Manufacturer or their dealers.

A meeting was convened with the tag manufacturers on Dec 5th, 2019 and with the acuqiring banks on Dec 9th, 2019. The chip used in the manufacture of RFID tags has to be imported and there is a lead time of about six weeks to get them.
