You should be able to keep between 0.5 and 1.1 cows per acre on average pasture. In general, rotational grazing may increase the cows-per-acre rate up to 30\% compared to traditional grazing. However, rotational grazing techniques require at least two paddocks and are usually more expensive.

Can you raise a cow on half acre?

How much land does a grass fed cow need?

You may have heard a rule-of-thumb is that it takes 1.5 to 2 acres to feed a cow calf pair for 12 months. That means we should be able to have 10 to 13 cows. Let’s see how this rule-of-thumb holds up. It looks like our rule-of-thumb held up pretty good, 11 cows on 20 acres, is 1.8 acres per cow.

A cow can produce as much as 120 pounds of wet manure in a single day, depending on the size and breed of the animal. Cow manure is a combination of bedding material, solid waste and wet waste. The same cow can produce up to 65 pounds of excrement or solid waste per day.

How much money does it cost to feed a cow?

For every cow, plan on feeding it at least 30 pounds of hay, which again, depending on your geographical area, this could cost about $175 per ton (2,000 pounds). Using the 30 pounds per day, $175 could last you about two months.
