How long does oil viscosity last?

Petroleum-based oils generally require replacement every 3,500 to 7,500 miles, depending on service use. Synthetic oils can easily offer double the service life as their chemical composition does not break down over time.

Does oil viscosity change with use?

During use, the VI improvers can sheer down and break apart, causing the viscosity of the oil to decrease. Remember, exposure to high heat is the biggest factor in causing the sheer of the viscosity-index improver.

Does oil thin out over time?

Not necessarily, engine oil thins as it warms by design, it gets into small area by thinning. The other side is it could be contaminated with fuel, that is bad and must be fixed. Thinning of Oil primarily means that it has lost its Viscosity and cannot maintain its Film Strength.

Does oil get thicker or thinner over time?

Because oil gets thinner as it heats up. Or you could say it gets thicker when it cools down. Say your engine needs 30-weight oil when it is running at operating temperature.

How long should a oil change last?

How Long an Oil Change Takes. Having an oil change completed is an easy commitment. Typically, an oil change takes about 30-45 minutes. The process includes draining out the existing oil and changing the oil filter, then placing new oil into the engine.

What happens when your oil is too thin?

Oil that’s too thin can fail to develop a consistent lubricating film, inviting metal-to-metal contact that causes wear. Extreme stress and heat add to the challenge. Since oil thins as it’s heated, the already-too-thin oil becomes even thinner under extreme heat, worsening the problem.

Does thicker oil burn less?

Will Thicker Oil Stop Burning? Unfortunately, the thicker engine oil will not stop your car from burning oil. This solution has been brought up often, with the idea being that a more viscous oil will not flow as easily and have a more challenging time getting past worn-out valve guides.
