How long can propofol be drawn up in a syringe?

In general anesthesia or procedural sedation: administration from a single vial or syringe must be completed within 6 hours of opening.

How long can you keep propofol?

Any unused propofol remaining at the end of 28 days should be discarded. The emulsion should not be mixed with other therapeutic agents prior to administration. No specific preanesthetic is either indicated or contraindicated with propofol.

Half-life: Propofol is bi-phasic, with its initial half-life being relatively quick, around 40 minutes, and its terminal half-life usually being 4 to 7 hours. Context-sensitive half-time may be up to 1 to 3 days after a 10-day infusion.

When is propofol contraindicated?

Propofol is contraindicated for use when general anesthesia or sedation is contraindicated. Propofol is also contraindicated in patients with hypersensitivity to the drug or to any of the components.

Propofol has been reported to have high stability in glass and relatively high stability up to 24 hours in polyvinyl chloride-based medical plastics.

Neurosurgical Patients Slower induction is recommended using boluses of 20 mg every 10 seconds. Slower boluses or infusions of DIPRIVAN for induction of anesthesia, titrated to clinical responses, will generally result in reduced induction dosage requirements (1 mg/kg to 2 mg/kg) (see PRECAUTIONS).

With the infusion method, sedation may be initiated by infusing DIPRIVAN at 100 mcg/kg/min to 150 mcg/kg/min (6 mg/kg/h to 9 mg/kg/h) for a period of 3 minutes to 5 minutes and titrating to the desired clinical effect while closely monitoring respiratory function.

Can you bolus propofol?

Most patients will require 1.5 – 4.5 mg propofol/kg body weight/h. The infusion may be supplemented by bolus administration of 10 – 20 mg (1 – 2 ml Propofol) if a rapid increase of the depth of sedation is required.

  2. Clean skin using skin preparation or alcohol wipe.
  3. Insert needle confidently through skin and dermis.
  4. Before injecting LA, aspirate to ensure you are not injecting into a blood vessel.
  5. Inject LA slowly.
