How is methane gas converted to methanol?

Conversion of methane to a liquid fuel is a more desirable alternative to compressed natural gas due to ease of storage. The two-step process produces liquid methanol by the steam reforming of methane to synthesis gas followed by the high pressure catalytic conversion of the synthesis gas to methanol.

Can methane be turned into methanol?

When methane is infused into porous iron zeolites, methanol is rapidly produced at room temperature with no additional heat or energy required. By comparison, the conventional industrial process for making methanol from methane requires temperatures of 1000°C (1832°F) and extreme high pressure.

How do they turn natural gas methane into a liquid?

Methane must be cooled below its critical temperature of -82.3 °C in order to be liquified under pressure. Because of the associated cryogenic apparatus, LNG tankers are used for transport. Methanol is a conveniently handled combustible liquid, but its energy density is half of that of gasoline.

How is methanol synthesis from natural gas?

On an industrial scale, methanol is predominantly produced from natural gas by reforming the gas with steam and then converting and distilling the resulting synthesized gas mixture to create pure methanol. The result is a clear, liquid, organic chemical that is water soluble and readily biodegradable.

Can methane be converted to natural gas?

Hu experimented with catalysts and processes that could cleanly convert methane—the primary component of natural gas—into both hydrogen and carbon during a process known as pyrolysis.

How is methanol different from methane?

is that methane is (organic compound|uncountable) the simplest aliphatic hydrocarbon, ch4, being a constituent of natural gas while methanol is (organic compound) the simplest aliphatic alcohol, ch3oh; a colourless, toxic, inflammable liquid, used as a solvent, antifreeze, in the chemical industry, and in the …

What is room temperature methanol?

Methanol is the simplest alcohol and is a light, volatile, colorless, flammable liquid with a distincitve odor. At room temperature it is a polar liquid and is used as an antifreeze, solvent, fuel and as a denaturant for ethanol.

Can methane gas be liquefied?

Methane cannot be condensed to a liquid by pressure at ordinary temperatures because the critical temperature3 of methane is −82.1 ºC. Natural gas can be liquefied at a pressure of 45.8 atm at or below its critical point temperature of −82.1 ºC to form liquefied natural gas (LNG)3 for commercial transport.

Why is natural gas converted to liquid form?

Liquefied natural gas (LNG) is natural gas (predominantly methane, CH4, with some mixture of ethane, C2H6) that has been cooled down to liquid form for ease and safety of non-pressurized storage or transport.

Is methanol a gas at room temperature?

Methanol, which contains 12.6 weight percent hydrogen, is a good hydrogen storage medium because it is a liquid at room temperature.

How much methane is in natural gas?

Thermal and physical properties. Commercial natural gas stripped of NGL and sold for heating purposes usually contains 85 to 90 percent methane, with the remainder mainly nitrogen and ethane.

What can you convert methane into?

Alternatively, methane can be converted into a useful mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide, called “synthesis gas,” by reaction with carbon dioxide in what is referred to as dry reforming of methane (DRM).

Can methane be converted to methanol at room temperature?

Researchers at the University of Illinois Chicago have discovered a way to convert the methane in natural gas into liquid methanol at room temperature. This discovery, reported in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, could potentially provide a cleaner energy source for many of our everyday activities.

Is methanol a cleaner fuel than natural gas?

Burning methane in natural gas contributes to carbon emissions, but methane converted to liquid methanol is a cleaner fuel. (Image: Aditya Prajapati and Meenesh Singh/UIC)

What are the advantages of methane as a fuel?

Its lower emission potentials and higher volumetric energy density make it an attractive alternative to fossil fuels, Singh said. “Besides being a cleaner-burning fuel, methane can also be stored safely in regular containers, unlike natural gas, which has to be stored under pressure and which is much more expensive,” Singh said.

Is there a better way to use natural gas?

A better way to use natural gas would be to convert it to methanol, a liquid fuel that burns more cleanly and can be used to produce gasoline and plastics. But converting the methane found in natural gas into methanol requires a lot of heat and pressure and generates a significant amount of carbon dioxide itself.
