How is mahalaya related to Durga Puja?

It marks the beginning of Navratri and Durga Puja. Their belief is that Goddess Durga was invocated on Mahalaya to kill Mahishasur. It is said that on Mahalaya Amavasya morning, first ancestors are given farewell and then in the evening Maa Durga comes to earth and stays here to bless people.

What is the difference between Basanti Puja and Durga Puja?

They are same. The only difference is Basanti Durga Puja was done by King Suratha as per Markandeya Puran’s Durga Saptashati. And Sharadiya Durga Puja was done by Shri Ramachandra Bhagvana to seek blessing of Katayani to slay Ravana as per Devi Bhagvatam.

Who started Durga Puja in India?

The first Barowari Durga Puja was organized in Kolkata by Bhowanipore Sanatan Dharmotsahini Sabha in 1909 at Balaram Bose Ghat Road, Bhowanipore. On this occasion, Sri Aurobindo published the famous Durga Stotra in his Bengali journal, Dharma, issue one “Kartika” dated 1316 AD.

Why do we celebrate Basanti Pooja?

It is believed that King Surath and Samadhi Vaishya met Medha Muni while they were wandering in the forests after losing their kingdoms. Medha Muni suggested to them to perform Basanti Durga Puja to get back their lost kingdoms.

What is the significance of Durga Puja?

Durga Puja is a celebration of the Mother Goddess and female power (Shakti) in the Hindu tradition. It is also a celebration of the victory of Goddess Durga over the evil buffalo demon Mahishasur.

What is the boon of Devi Durga to Rama?

Devi Durga granted the boon to Rama that she would leave the side of Ravana so that he could kill the demon and rescue Sita. Rama had started the puja on the 6th day (Shashthi) of Ashwin and the Goddess appeared before him on the 8th day (Astami).

When was Durga first mentioned in the Vedic literature?

The temple inscription has been dated by modern methods to 608 CE. The name Durga, and related terms, appear in Vedic literature, such as in the Rigveda hymns 4.28, 5.34, 8.27, 8.47, 8.93 and 10.127, and in sections 10.1 and 12.4 of the Atharvaveda A deity named Durgi appears in section 10.1.7 of the Taittiriya Aranyaka.

Why is Durga worshipped in autumn?

According to Shree Shree Chandi, by orders of medhas rishi, King Surath (in order to get back his lost kingdom)and Samadhi Vaishya (in order to gain Brahmagyan) had inaugurated the worship of Devi Durga in autumn . This is the first instance of the Goddess being worshipped in the such a uncustomary time.
