Is pollination a niche?

Pollination is a crucial niche component for plants. The niche concept can apply to both occupied and currently unoccupied niches. The basis of specialization of pollination systems may be tradeoffs that favor adaptation to particular niches.

Why do oceanic islands lack certain animals?

Small populations and genetic variability; restrictive specialization. Relative lack of adaptability to change; loss of resistance to consumers and disease. Loss of essential coevolved organisma. Relative lack of natural disturbance, especially fire, in the evolutionary history of many island biotas.

But as these animals and their spawn are immediately killed (with the exception, as far as known, of one Indian species) by sea-water, there would be great difficulty in their transportal across the sea, and therefore we can see why they do not exist on strictly oceanic islands.

How was Kauai formed?

Magma spewing from a hot spot beneath the floating Pacific Tectonic Plate formed Kauai as it did the other islands in the chain. Kauai is the oldest of the Hawai’ian islands and it is believed the volcano that created Kauai first began erupting some 10 million years ago.

Are all islands connected to the ocean floor?

What if bees went extinct?

Without bees, they would set fewer seeds and would have lower reproductive success. This too would alter ecosystems. Beyond plants, many animals, such as the beautiful bee-eater birds, would lose their prey in the event of a die-off, and this would also impact natural systems and food webs.
