How is Gorilla glass used?
Smartphones were the first product to utilize the versatile and strong glass, but new uses have been found for it since. The durable glass can be found in laptops, tablets, wearable technologies such as smart watches, office walls, and GPS systems. The uses for it are ever-expanding.
Is Gorilla Glass 3 unbreakable?
Gorilla® Glass 3 is not only chemically strengthened — its atomic configuration is formulated so that the glass is fundamentally tougher and more damage resistant, even before chemical strengthening. This is the unique feature of Gorilla® Glass 3.
Which is the strongest Gorilla Glass?
Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus
Introducing Corning® Gorilla® Glass Victus® — the toughest Gorilla® Glass yet, with significant improvement in both drop and scratch performance, for the first time ever in the Gorilla Glass family. In our lab tests, Gorilla Glass Victus survived drops onto hard, rough surfaces from up to 2 meters.
Can Gorilla Glass be removed?
Heat the glass with a hair dryer on a low setting for 15 seconds. The heat loosens the adhesive behind the glass, making it easier to remove. However, tempered glass should be heated briefly and only with low heat to avoid damaging any components behind it. Get the glass nice and toasty but not hot to the touch.
How is Gorilla Glass strengthened?
Gorilla Glass is strengthened using an ion-exchange process which forces large ions into the spaces between molecules on the glass surface. Specifically, glass is placed in a 400°C molten potassium salt bath, which forces potassium ions to replace the sodium ions originally in the glass.
How does ion exchange work in Gorilla Glass?
Corning uses ion exchange to chemically strengthen Gorilla Glass by stuffing it with large ions, which creates state of compression. The glass is dipped in a salt bath at 400 degrees Celsius (752 degrees Fahrenheit). In the bath, small sodium ions leave the glass and bigger potassium ions from the salt take their place.
What is Gorilla Glass SR+ and where is it used?
Gorilla Glass SR+ was first used on the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch in 2016. Gorilla Glass has also addressed the automobile market. Ford Motor Company announced it will be using the material for the front and rear windshields on its Ford GT sports car beginning in 2016.
What is the difference between the different types of Gorilla Glass?
Gorilla Glass 3 resists deep scratches and is more flexible than its predecessors. Gorilla Glass 4 is thinner and more damage resistant. Gorilla Glass 5 was introduced in 2016 for use in the Samsung Galaxy Note 7. Gorilla Glass SR+ was also introduced in 2016, for use in the Samsung Gear S3 smartwatch.
