How is chess and math related?

The relationship between chess and mathematics in seen in a number of ways: Chess promotes thinking skills of higher order. Analysis of positions has a lot in common with mathematical problems. Correlation: to decide what piece is best to sacrifice at a certain point.

Certain types of mathematical thinking are akin to chess thinking, such as non-verbal (spatial) reasoning, systematic grouping of possibilities, methods of proof, and a high degree of mental flexibility. About one tenth of mathematicians are chess players and one sixth of chess players are mathematicians.

Why are people who are good at math good at chess?

Chess players are good at maths because the game promotes thinking skills, develops visual memory, requires constant calculation and it introduces geometric concepts such as files, rows and diagonals.

Results show a strong correlation between chess and math scores, and a higher improvement in math in the experimental group compared with the control group. These results foster the hypothesis that even a short-time practice of chess in children can be a useful tool to enhance their mathematical abilities.

There is a also a high correlation of musicians and chess as well though not at such a high level. But just because you are good at math does not make you good at chess (or visa versa) I suck at math BIGTIME, I also failed my math exams (still passed through though).

People who are into Chess are very logical, very logical (10\% Maths now) in the sense they will look for cause, effect and consequences at almost everything. If you play Chess regularly you may even apply “cause, effect and consequences” in your life too. Because you are so into it that only logic makes sense to you.

What does it mean to be a good chess player?

To be a good chess player means to have a good working memory, spatial memory, focus, attention, having the ability to sustain spatial calculations in your mind for prolonged periods of time.
