A debit card is somewhat similar to an ATM card because it can be used to take out cash. It is also tied to a checking or savings account which will reflect a withdrawal made in real time. As long as you have sufficient funds in the checking account tied to your debit card, making a purchase can be possible.

How do credit card payment processing systems work?

Once the card is swiped or dipped, the merchant’s POS system sends the transaction request to the merchant’s payment processor. The processor sends the transaction request to the corresponding credit card network.
