Principals and teachers no longer have to worry about passing the information from student to student. Using social media makes this process easier, faster, and effective. Timely sharing information can also increase students’ productivity and help everyone to follow up on every important piece of information.
The research also showed that through social media, teachers can enhance interactions between students, between students and teachers, and with people and resources outside the classroom. All are important for a student’s sense of belonging in an educational community.
Too much use of social media can have adverse effects on students’ minds, and they may also be exposed to bad posture, eye strain, and physical and mental stress.
What social media do teachers use?
Not surprisingly, teachers report heavy use of Facebook. In fact, 83\% of our respondents said they use Facebook, followed by 72\% who use Pinterest, 54\% who use Instagram, and 48\% who use Twitter.
Should teachers use social media to communicate with students?
Avoid being too friendly, personal, or chatty with students over texts or social media. It’s great to be available to students, but too much friendliness will confuse students and may make them misunderstand your intentions. Don’t share personal information. Ever.
The use of social media can provide schools and students with opportunities to connect to the world, and they can also be used creatively to tell a school’s story, to celebrate success stories, or to rebrand a school. Social media connections between students and teachers can lead to disaster.
It is certainly not illegal for both students and teachers to follow each other on social media. Thefe are no laws addressing this. There may be school districts which have policies, but I have never heard of any.
And a few negative stories in the press about inappropriate student/teacher relationships may color how others view the connection. Social media provides an avenue for connecting with students outside of the classic school day paradigm. However, maintaining a social relationship with a student must be treated with care.
What is the impact of social media on teaching and learning?
The social sites make it possible and practical for the teacher to teach a class conveniently even if it is doing so remotely. A third positive impact of social media sites is that they conveniently help the teacher and students’ interaction.
Is social media distracting students from their studies?
The recent years have seen rapid increase in the number of social media platforms. At first, the concern for most teachers was that the social media platforms were nothing but distractions to the education system. According to them, the sites caused the students not to focus on their studies or even get exposed to vices.
But even if an outright ban is not in place, it is important to consider the potential risks and rewards before moving forward. Before you decide to friend or follow your students on social media, consider these pros and cons based on the grades you teach and the institutions for which you work.
