How does shift work affect police officers?

Shift rotations or changeovers to new shift schedules can disrupt circadian rhythms and sleep length, thereby resulting in fatigue. Shift changes and extended shifts lead to increased fatigue, and it is common for police to work double shifts due to staffing needs of community policing demands.

Most police department’s patrol divisions have three separate shifts, Morning, Swing/Evening, and Graveyard. They don’t always change the same but most change at 6AM, 2PM, 10PM. Some change at 7AM, 3PM, & 11PM. They are done this way to avoid peak times when it comes to calls for service.

It turns out, that 12-hour schedules were the most commonly used. Followed by 10-hour and lastly 8-hour. There were a handful of departments that mixed 8, 10, and12-hour shifts as well. Or some did 8.5-hour shifts, 10.5-hour shifts, and different variations like that.

All MPS officers currently receive London Weighting and London Allowance on top of national police pay scales. Officers who join the MPS who are not entitled to rent or housing allowance do however qualify for an additional (non-pensionable) London Allowance of £3,327 per annum.
