How does NDMA form in ranitidine?

According to a laboratory study from 2011, several dimethylamine-containing drugs bound to an electron-rich moiety (such as ranitidine, doxylamine and chlorpheniramine, sumatriptan, nizatidine, diltiazem, and tetracycline) form NDMA when exposed to chloramine, a commonly used drinking water disinfectant.

What is NDMA found in?

NDMA is a known environmental contaminant and found in water and foods, including meats, dairy products, and vegetables. The FDA has been investigating NDMA and other nitrosamine impurities in blood pressure and heart failure medicines called Angiotensin II Receptor Blockers (ARBs) since last year.

What is the link between ranitidine and cancer?

Zantac contaminated with NDMA, a cancer-causing chemical, has been linked to cancer. Types of cancer caused by Zantac include bladder cancer, colon cancer and prostate cancer. In April 2020, Zantac products were withdrawn from the market because of the potential cancer risk.

Has Zantac always contain NDMA?

In tests the FDA conducted, NDMA was found in both the finished medication and its active pharmaceutical ingredients. Tests that simulated conditions in the digestive system demonstrated that NDMA did not form as Zantac was broken down in the body.

What drugs have NDMA in them?

N-nitrosodimethylamine (NDMA) is a hepatotoxic agent and carcinogen contaminant in commonly used medications such as valsartan, losartan, irbesartan, and ranitidine.

Does famotidine contain NDMA?

FDA’s testing of samples of alternatives such as Pepcid (famotidine), Tagamet (cimetidine), Nexium (esomeprazole), Prevacid (lansoprazole), and Prilosec (omeprazole) show no NDMA in these medicines.

Is ranitidine safe again?

For now, anyone who used Zantac or ranitidine products will not be able to buy it until the FDA reapproves it once more–if it reapproves it at all–and reaffirms it is safe for public consumption. In the meantime, you can take other acid reflux drugs that the FDA has deemed safe.
