How does Exp work in 5e?
In general, XP works as a system that indicates the players growing in skill as adventurers. The more XP = the higher the level. The abilities that the XP unlocks via obtaining new levels show how they learn new things as they grow.
What is the difference between XP and milestone?
Milestone leveling helps dungeon masters combat all the murder-hoboing going on in their games. Also, by using milestone leveling, you are awarding PCs for progress made in the game, which is the same thing you’d be doing if you used XP leveling but gave out XP for things other than just killing monsters.
How is XP calculated in D&D?

- Multiply the character level with 300.
- For each step that the CR of the monster is above the character level, multiply the result with 1,42, repeating the process several times if necessary.
- Divide the result by the number of party members plus allies.
What is adjusted XP?
“Adjusted XP” is for determining encounter difficulty; actual XP is what you give to the party for beating the encounter. The difference between XP and adjusted XP in determining the difficulty of a combat encounter is explained in the guidelines on building combat encounters on Basic Rules p.
