How does a VW distributor work?

Distributor. The distributor takes the the power from the coil, and distributes it into each spark plug (4) through and additional four HT leads. The remaining four are outputs and will each be connected to the spark plug (4) for each cylinder. The firing order of a VW type 1 engine is 1–4–3–2.

Installing a new distributor can be done in a few simple steps:

  1. Set the engine to top dead center (TDC)
  2. Mark and remove the old distributor.
  3. Install the new distributor.
  4. Set the base ignition timing.
  5. Tighten the distributor hold-down bolt.

How do you know if you have a bad distributor point?

If points are bad, the engine could experience multiple problems. Bad point connections cause engine overrun, timing issues, speed missing and causes the engine to misfire or fail to start. Look closely at the surface of contact points. Check for corrosion or degradation.
