How does a catch basin work?

A catch basin has a grate on top and a drainage pipe that slopes away from the basin. Water and solids enter the box through the grate. Solids settle to the bottom while water drains out of the pipe. This pipe typically connects to the larger local plumbing system and directs the water to a sewage plant or stream.
